Building an Emergency Plan

  • September 14, 2015

September is National Preparedness Month. It’s a time to take action and make plans in the event of a natural disaster or emergency. Here are some tips for preparing to the best of your ability.
Know your area – Is the area in which you live prone to flooding? Tornadoes? Earthquakes? Knowing which natural disasters are more prevalent can help you prepare. While a storm cellar might be helpful in the event of a tornado, it is one of the least safe places to be during an earthquake. Having a clear understanding of what could happen and the best way to protect yourself is the first step in developing a safe plan.
Food – Canned food is important to have on hand in the event of an emergency. But the trick? Don’t keep it in your cupboard mixed in with your other every day items. Have it in a bag ready to grab should a disaster strike. Don’t forget the can opener as well! Fill this bag with food that is sustainable and well preserved so it can last a while. Bottles of water are also important, as your normal water supply could become tainted or hard to reach.
Necessities – Fill your emergency pack with necessities such as soap, cleansing wipes, medicine, and blankets.
Safety – Safety is going to be essential if a disaster occurs. Flashlights, extra batteries, flares, a battery-operated radio, and a Swiss Army Knife type of tool will help keep you up to date on local information as well as able to navigate or seek help if necessary.
First aid – Remember to include first aid products such as Band-Aids, cleansers, adhesive tape, antibiotic lotions, and medicines. Hopefully everyone stays safe but in case someone needs first aid, be prepared.
It’s never easy to think about what will happen if something goes wrong. But it will be even harder to think about it during the event. Plan ahead of time, talk to family members and neighbors, and be sure everyone understands their role. Having a clear plan to follow will keep people safe and together.
