The Difference Between Social Media Platforms

  • January 06, 2015

Does it seem like there is an excessive amount of social media profiles you can create and platforms you can be active on? Not sure which is best suited for your needs? Let’s explore four of the most popular social media platforms and the main reasons for using them.
Twitter – Twitter is a fast-paced platform where people are limited to 140 characters when engaging with others. An “@” sign is used to converse directly with another user while hashtags (#) are placed in front of keywords to categorize the conversation. Twitter should be used for quick updates and instant announcements. Be prepared to respond to people quickly and provide constant updates, as this is a to-the-second platform where the older posts get pushed to the bottom so stay relevant!
Facebook – This platform is populated with people who enjoy sharing photos, updates without character restrictions, and connecting with people on a more personal level. Facebook allows you to share updates with your connections in a timeline format with photos, videos, and content. While an more informal platform, it can be great for connecting with people through your family and friends to grow your following.
LinkedIn – LinkedIn is a professional social media platform where users are able to upload their resume and create a profile marketing themselves as experts in their field and highlighting skills and experience. This platform is used for both recruiting and job searching. It is an excellent tool professionals should take advantage of to broadcast themselves in their respective field gaining credibility and exposure. All posts should be career and business related. Showcase your knowledge and business sense through LinkedIn.
Google+ – Most companies and people use Google+ to connect with others searching the Internet for similar topics. It is a spot to communicate with others about technology and what is happening in the world. Google prioritizes the content posted on Google+ thereby increasing your SEO (search engine optimization). Why miss out on the opportunity to rank higher in Google search results?
Choose the social media platform that is right for you. Are you interested in broadcasting yourself as a true professional? Start with LinkedIn. Do you prefer to grow your business through family and friends with a more down-to-earth approach? Join Facebook. Just joining the conversation and developing a presence on social media will help grow your reputation and business, so get started today!
